bringing families together
The month of April has been an interesting one, not only because we got to enjoy a nice dose of public holidays (which was rather fantastic), but largely because there were a number of religions that celebrated holy days. Religious diversity should be celebrated. This is yet another aspect adding to the richness and culture of Africa.
…..and then there is mother’s day
In South Africa, Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May. People of South Africa celebrate Mother's Day
moyo brings more families together for mothers day .

strong hands of mother africa
By “Sistah Joy” Matthews Alford
Strong hands of Mother Africa
Awaken places deep inside me
Where my ancestors dwell
Like distant echoes, your heart-beat
Reverberates off Kilimanjaro’s mountain-tops
Pulses down the Nile
Crosses the Sudan
And flows into my soul
Strong hands of Mother Africa
Call my absent spirit
To return and commune with the elders
Those who sojourned before me
Now light my path and
Await my homecoming

Musicians
THURS 28 MAY - OLUFEMI
Olufemi is a multi talented Nigerian saxophonist whose youth belies his musical capabilities. He will literally blow you away with his charm & musical style he terms ‘Afro-Soul Fusion’. A combination of afrobeat, highlife, batanga, raggae, jazz and spiritual afro dance, which he marries with the contemporary vibes of keyboard & drums. A truly eclectic and lively performer & performance. Olufemi is not only a skilled musician who sing’s & play’s all brass, wind instruments & piano but is also a songwriter and an arranger. Olufemi is currently based in Johannesburg , South Africa where he performs with an ensemble of performers from a nine piece large band for festival’s as well as his 4-5 piece band, trio, duo and solo acts . He recently released his debut album called JUST IN NEWTOWN in which he expressed himself as an African soul artist. Olufemi’s belief that music is food for the soul has led to his motto “Music is Life”.
FRI 29 MAY – AYODEL
Ayodel’s passion for guitar & music started at the tender age of 14. His musical career took off after he joined SONNY

OKOSUNS band, touring around Europe and the African continent. In 1996 Ayodel returned to Nigeria embarking on a solo
career. He recorded six albums with the late Sonny Okusun and has produced several albums for associate musicians. In 2004 he recorded his first solo album MAJO MAYO, a combination of gospel, afro & juju music. This album led to Ayodel’s invitation to South Africa to participate in SA’s Yoruba day festivities. The success of this tour enabled Ayodel to make the move to SA and he has not looked back since. In 2006 he released his second album ON ONE LIKE GOD performing at a variety of venues like The Blue’s Room, moyo, Bassline etc, sharing the stage with the likes of Malaika, Mxo, Kunle Ayo, Siphokazi etc. In 2007 Ayodel recorded his first jazz album DOUBLE PORTION. The Album is a combination of Afro Smooth Jazz with a West African and Gospel influence. Ayodel does not play one particular brand of music. His approach is to decide on the style of the song according to the message he would like to send across to his audience, although his passion to be a Jazz guitarist always influences his music and style of playing. This is definitely one performer to watch out for!

Nigerian Jazz guitarist, singer and composer (and Kora award winner), Kúnlé has got it all in his name: talent in abundance and his live performance fills houses – The Yoruba name Kúnlé liberally translated means "in abundance"; literally translated "kún" stands for "to fill" and "lé" for "the house". Either way, so far both interpretations have proven to be accurate. Kúnlé is a wizard of Guitar, whose musical spell made singers Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Judith Sephuma accompany him spontaneously during one of his first live shows in Cape Town. In Johannesburg “Bayete" Bandleader, Jabu Khanyile, was captivated and could not resist joining the stage with Kúnlé. Kunle’s music is vibey and compelling, crossing cultural boundries and suitable for all occasions and age groups. A performer at heart who also knows how to get his audience moving!
SUN 31 MAY - AYO & THE MERCY SPRING
Ayo is a Nigerian saxophonist with exceptional talent. His fellow colleagues are dynamic & versatile musicians who are currently carving their niche across the African continent. Their trio is comprised of a saxophone player, keyboard player & percussionist. Their repertoire includes impressive contemporary jazz originals and inspirational
takes on timeless sentimental’s, a fusion of Afro-Jazz, R&B and Kwa-Jazz. Ayo has performed at many South African venues countrywide and is a regular performer at moyo with his Trio, Quartet and Solo acts.

straight from the head chef at moyo stellenbosch
Hi to all moyonites!
moyo Stellenbosch has a new and exciting “chefs’ theatre” that has been running for a couple of weeks. The “chefs’ theatre”: is a new collaboration between the Institute of Culinary Arts (ICA) which is a reputable cooking school located on the Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch and moyo Stellenbosch.
What is a “ chefs’ theatre” …………………… this is a live cooking station where apprentice chefs are given the opportunity to practice their cooking skills with an audience.
The dishes that they prepare are creations of their own, within the moyo spirit and culinary guidelines.
moyo’s intention is to give these young students the opportunity to showcase their talent, creativity and skills in the hope that they will aspire to great heights in their paths to becoming great chefs.
The dishes that are prepared by the apprentice chefs stand a chance to feature on the new menu for our next site in Blaauwberg. Our guests must enjoy the dishes and approve that they represent the moyo mojo.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation anyone who would like to share their expertise or those who just want to enjoy what is on offer!

stories from eden on the bay
MAMA MADE THIS by Fats Mhlope
“This…,” my elegant companion declared, emphatically pointing a bejewelled forefinger at her Moroccan Lamb Mechoui, “This… is exactly the way Mama used to make it.” But a slight puzzlement was creeping over her face……
Just MAMA MADE THIS
by Fats Mhlope
“Serious! The same flavours, the same warm spiciness, just like Mama made it!”
My lunch partner was tucking into the signature Moyo dish of roast lamb marinated in cumin and sweet paprika. I couldn’t help wondering what a privileged childhood she must have had with a mama that could cook like a Moyo chef. I fleetingly remembered my own mom’s humble creamed cauliflower – my favourite childhood dish.
“But…,” my companion added with a frown, “this is much more… much more…” The word – like the piquancy of the red wine jus dripping from her mechoui – was on the tip of her tongue.
“Nca?,” I offered. “Exactly! This is much more nca! Much nicer than I can remember my dear old Mama ever making it.”
Our conversation at Moyo, Eden on the Bay had turned from today’s extensive shopping spree at Eden on the Bay to mothers – and cooking… and caring. How appropriate. Here we were sitting at Moyo on the beachfront at Big Bay Beach overlooking the bay. Table Mountain loomed colossal, with the Mother City at its feet.
The Mother City. Suddenly the name held so much more meaning for me. A sense of place overwhelmed me. Behind us, the beat of Moyo’s African drums rumbled melodiously. We were enjoying uniquely African food. (I was devouring oxtail braised with butterbeans in rosemary infusedbeef stock jus.)
We were taking in the classic picture postcard view of that monumental granite icon of the Mama City of Mama Africa. The best view in Africa, I thought. This mountain. This cape. This bay. Surely this is the place that brought forth all of Africa. Surely this must be where Africa began.
Across Table Bay the city seemed distant and quiet. The Mama of Mama Africa was setting her table. The cumulus clouds covering the top were masses of creamed cauliflower.
NOTE:The musings of Fats Mhlope are fiction. Eden on the Bay is a beautiful fact – with irresistible seafront restaurants and enticing lifestyle stores right on Blaauwberg’s Big Bay Beach. Moyo at Eden on the Bay will become reality towards September this year.
